Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions patients ask most about AdaptHealth's enteral nutrition program.
Your physician prescribed enteral nutrition therapy, and AdaptHealth was selected to manage your home enteral supplies. That means we handle your formula, feeding system, accessories, insurance billing, and prior authorization on your behalf. If you received a call or letter from us after a hospital stay or clinic visit, it's because your care team set up your home supplies through us.
Most insurance plans do not cover enteral formula taken by mouth — coverage applies to formula delivered via a feeding tube.
Medicare Part B covers enteral nutrition therapy as Durable Medical Equipment (DME) when it is the patient's primary means of sustaining nutrition, supported by a valid physician order and medical documentation. To qualify, the patient must have a permanent structural or digestive condition, and dietary adjustment or oral supplements alone must be insufficient.
For commercial insurance, coverage varies by plan and some plans do not cover enteral therapy at all. We verify your benefits upon receipt of your referral and confirm your coverage before your first shipment. Either way, AdaptHealth manages coverage verification, prior authorization, and claims on your behalf.
For most patients, we can ship formula and supplies based on your clinical plan. If you need to adjust your order, request a delivery date change, or run low unexpectedly, fill out the form below and our team will be in touch.
Clogged tube: Flush with warm water using a 60 mL syringe in a gentle push-pull motion. Never force liquid through a blocked tube. If flushing does not clear the obstruction, contact your care team. Do not attempt to use carbonated beverages or cranberry juice, which are not clinically recommended.
Dislodged or fallen-out tube: This is a medical issue. Contact your physician or go to the emergency room promptly. Stoma sites can close quickly, especially in newer tube placements. Do not attempt to reinsert the tube yourself.
Clinical support: AdaptHealth's team can help troubleshoot supply-related concerns. For tube-related medical issues, contact your prescribing physician or the care team who placed your tube.
Enteral nutrition orders need to be signed by a prescribing provider — MD, DO, PA, or NP. Orders signed by a registered dietitian (RD), licensed practical nurse (LPN), or registered nurse (RN) can't be accepted.
We don't provide TPN. Total Parenteral Nutrition is delivered intravenously and requires a home infusion provider.
We can ship up to 10 days before your next insurance eligibility date. Per insurance guidelines, orders can't be processed earlier than that window - so we recommend reaching out about a week and a half before you expect to run low.
Yes - you can request less formula or fewer supplies for a given month. Any increase in quantity, or a permanent change in either direction, requires a new physician order and updated clinical documentation.
No. Extension sets are a patient preference item - you can switch styles without a new prescription. Just let our team know what you need.
If a prescribed formula is discontinued or can't be sourced, we'll contact your physician to request an updated prescription for a comparable formula we carry. We handle that process on your behalf.
We can only provide a button device - or any enteral supply - when tube feeding is the patient's primary source of nutrition. We're not able to supply equipment used solely for medication administration, and insurance guidelines don't allow two separate DME companies to bill for the same product line.
Pump backpacks aren't covered under most insurance plans, but they can be purchased privately.
